ENERGYPOPLAR will provide a pipeline for the delivery of tailored economic and sustainable plant lignocellulosic biomass for the bioethanol industry that is low-input and environmentally sustainable. Energy poplar trees will support an environmentally sustainable agriculture that uses less agrochemicals, develops rural economies and spares natural forests from agricultural expansion.
ENERGYPOPLAR will also develop poplar as a bioenergy short rotation coppice (SRC) crop system, suitable for large-scale deployment in Europe in areas unlikely to be used for food agricultural production.
The research in ENERGYPOPLAR will contribute to EU energy security by:
- providing a sustainable supply of biomass adapted for bioethanol production and EU conditions
- supporting the development of an effective bioethanol supply infrastructure within the EU
- developing the EU science and training base for biofuel R&D
